I’ve been asked to contribute to our blog my heartfelt thoughts and feelings on life at Woodberry Wine, our culture, and our values. I would like to title this series “Leaves from the Vine”, a multifaceted metaphor which will be my voice and medium in this endeavor.
This year has been an awesome and exciting one so far for our company. We have had the pleasure of welcoming many new individuals to our teams from sales, to office, and logistics and also making many new partners and friends in network. It has also been a time of great introspection for our company. “Who are we?”, “Why do we the things we do?”, “How can we improve?” It takes courage to ask these kinds of questions and I admire my colleagues’ abilities in exploring these areas.
The identity of our company is such an abstraction. Its not simply our name, a logo, a website, this blog post. It is our values that bind us together, bring us to a common ground. It is a vision that we share, ideals we strive to incarnate and manifest. It is pride. It shows in the quality of each of our characters, the quality of the relationships we create with each other and with our partners.
I have been helping make magic happen at Woodberry Wine since May, 2012. When people ask me what I do, I tell them, “I work for a wine distributor called ‘Woodberry Wine’. We bring in fine wines from all over the world and distribute them across the lower peninsula of Michigan.” This is what I say, verbatim, every time.
I love being given the opportunity just to say it. It makes me proud because what we do is cool, interesting, and I have fun with the people I work with. I think of all the work I do with my team, the challenges we’ve overcome, great victories. It helps give me purpose and identity as a human being.
In this month’s edition of “Leaves from the Vine” I’d like to raise a glass to all of my colleague’s for being a part of something greater.
