On July 27 & July 28 the wine world will center its’ attention on Traverse City as it transforms itself into “The City Of Riesling”. This two-day event, created by Amanda Danielson of Trattoria Stella and The Franklin and Sean O’Keefe of Chateau Grand Traverse will be centered on the Midwest release of famed wine expert Stuart Pigott’s newest book, “Best White Wine On Earth: The Riesling Story”, along with the world premier of his short film, “Watch Your Back -A Riesling Movie”.
Adam Satchwell of Shady Lane Cellars will be featuring his Sparkling Riesling 2012 as a part of the “Night of 100 Rieslings” package on July 27th. Adam is a great winemaker who is universally respected in the industry so it is befitting that all who attend Stuart Pigott’s Premier of the “Watch Your Back -A Riesling Movie”. will enjoy Shady Lane’s sparkling version of this illustrious grape!
“The City Of Riesling” event is focused around education and the true love of wine. It obviously aims, in part, to highlight Northern Michigan’s importance as a Riesling wine region as well as to dispel the many myths about this grape. Foremost amongst these myths is the notion that it is always sweet. Those of us in the business know this is far from true and that Riesling is nearly as often dry as it is sweet. Dry Riesling has a palate cleansing effect akin to that of Champagne, and is every bit as versatile with food, if not more so. The dry styles that Woodberry Wine offers are Shady Lane Dry Riesling, Shady Lane Sparkling Riesling and Max Ferdinand Richter Mulheimer Sonnelay Spatlese Trocken, to name a few. Try this style of Riesling with oysters, shellfish, pate, charcuterie, etc. as it will accentuate all of these. Off dry versions are great with spice. Pick up or order a bottle of Paul Zinck “Portrait”, Shady Lane Semi-Dry, or Max Ferdinand Richter Mulheimer Sonnenlay “Zeppelin” the next time you are having a spicy dish out or at home.
With winemakers from around the globe, hordes of Riesling enthusiasts and various Sommeliers both working and attending this event promises to be a one of a kind experience. Woodberry Wine is honored to have some of our Producers represented at this event, and I am personally thrilled to see an international wine event of this magnitude taking place in Northern Michigan. As some of the world’s foremost connoisseurs of wine descend on Traverse City to enjoy Adam’s wine from Shady Lane, amongst many others, it lends credence to the fact that our little town is one that not only produces great wine but is very serious about wine in general. It makes calling this area my home just a little more sweet, or dry if you prefer (Riesling Humor:-).
